What's Blooming in June

What's Blooming in June

June in central Indiana is part of a weird transition. The cool-season flowers are mostly winding down, and even though the summer crops are stepping up week by week, not everything is in full bloom yet.

Currently in bouquets

Zinnias are the stars right now, in all shades pink, butter yellow, and pale oranges. Snapdragons, strawflowers, and feverfew are filling in beautifully while we not-so-patiently stare at them day after day.

Coming next

Sunflowers! No one asked us, but we think the “knee-high by the Fourth of July” applies accurately to the sunnies just as much as the corn. And knee-high they are! We had our first bloom open about this time last year, but several weeks of cool June weather likely kept them growing a little slower than usual.

No year of flower farming is ever alike, and that might be the best and worst thing. The heat, the rain, the storms (tornadoes this year!)…Mother Nature is always keeping us on our toes.
